Detail

Composed in the fall of 2000 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Itoigawa Symphonic Band, “Dance Celebration” premiered at the band’s 22nd regular concert that October 14th, conducted by the composer. It was performed at Kyo-En IV the following year. Revisions were made in orchestration, and it was next published by Brain Music as a rental piece.
The work opens with a showy introduction announcing a celebration and maintains that tempo throughout. Tatebe had studied American composers such as Charles Carter, and his interest in such masters influenced the uncomplicated pace of the piece.
The word “dance” in the title reflects the fact that the majority of the piece is in three quarter time. Also, it shows that Tatebe envisioned a dance when he wrote the music.

■Performance Instructions
You can set the tempo as you like. Remember to keep a distinction between rhythm and melody while consistently maintaining a light tempo.
The music is mainly in three-four time. In some measures, however, note lengths and rhythms are grouped with six-eight feel by use of syncopation and accents. The composer wishes for you to enjoy and utilize this rhythmic variety.

Since the percussion sound leads this piece, percussionists need not play conservatively. Rather, keep in mind that you are the foundation of the work.
