Comment by the composer:
Chung Shin Yun, director of Higashiosaka Korean Junior High School Band, commissioned this arrangement to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the bandfs membership in the Osaka Prefecture All Japan Band Association. Along with Yunfs group, other Korean School Bands in Osaka joined the AJBA at the same time. As a goodwill gesture, he requested that I combine the representative Korean folk song Ariran with the Japanese nursery song Akatonbo, by Kosaku Yamada.@
The work starts with the melody of Akatonbo. Then it carries the melody of Ariran with gChang Dan of Chung Morih accompaniment. gChang Dan of Chung Morih is a twelve-eight meter rhythm pattern characterized by an accented ninth beat. In this particular work, the rhythm pattern is expressed with 4 bars of 3/4 time. After a transitional section, the Akatonbo melody appears again in an arranged gChang Dan of Pan Sar Purih rhythm. gChang Dan of Pan Sar Purih is typically a fast triple rhythm with an accent behind the second beat. In this work, syncopated gChang Dan of Pan Sar Purih is adapted to wind music. The Akatonbo melody continues as variations develop on several motifs. After the climax with a chorale by brass players, Ariran and Akatonbo are played together until the work comes to a quiet ending.
Osaka prefecture has the largest number of Korean residents in Japan. This work should serve as a bridge not only between Japanese society and Koreans living in Japan but also between Japan and the Korean Peninsula.
